Under certain operating conditions in high humidity areas, condensation can form in the intake air system. Condensation can cause rust and corrosion to form and may lead to premature Piston, Ring, and Liner (PRL) wear. Premature wear of these components can cause detonation shutdown events.Follow the procedure below to help prevent condensation in the intake air system.
Before installing any new components or iron, inspect the intake air systems for corrosion and clean if necessary to prevent damage to the new components.Note: Evaluate humidity levels with engine operation.
Where applicable, increase the intake air manifold temperature to a minimum of 60° 3°C (140° 5.4°F) at full load.
For an engine equipped with a Separate Circuit Aftercooler (SCAC) pump on the engine, replace the thermostat assemblies with 525-8363 Thermostat As.
For an engine equipped with an SCAC pump off the engine, increase the SCAC temperature to 60° 3°C (140° 5.4°F) by adjusting the customer supplied system.
After increasing the SCAC temperature to the desired value, run a Gas Engine Rating Pro (GERP) site analysis. Adjust the set point timing as indicated in the datasheet.
Based on the fuel quality (below 80 MN), the maximum power output capability may be reduced. To address this issue, a new Humidity/Fuel Tolerant (HFT) configuration is available with the new 424-7167 Piston.
Perform a GERP analysis prior to implementing these changes to determine if an HFT is a preferred option. HFT ratings are currently available in GERP.
Depending upon the current engine configuration, the turbocharger nozzle ring may need replaced.
