Illustration 1 g00298801The power train ECM uses the main display module on the Caterpillar Monitoring System for showing diagnostic information to service personnel. Diagnostic information concerning the power train system is sent on the CAT data link to the Caterpillar Monitoring System. Service personnel must be familiar with the Caterpillar Monitoring System in order to troubleshoot the Power Train Electronic Control System. For troubleshooting the Power Train Electronic Control System, service personnel must place the Caterpillar Monitoring System in Service Mode of operation. The 4C-8195 Control Service Tool is used for changing the display modes of the monitor. See Testing and Adjusting, "Using Caterpillar Monitoring System to determine diagnostic codes.". The mode Number for the diagnostic mode is mode 3.The power train ECM detects problems that occur with most of the inputs and outputs. A diagnostic code is detected when the signal at the connector contact of the ECM is outside a valid range. The ECM then records the diagnostic code. If the diagnostic code goes away, the information remains stored for future reference. An indicator in the display area tells when a problem is currently present. When service code indicator is showing "SERV CODE", a diagnostic code is currently present. When "SERV CODE" is OFF, a diagnostic code is not currently present. Service code indicator works in the same manner for other electronic controls that are reporting a diagnostic code to the Caterpillar Monitoring System. Therefore, to determine the diagnostic code which is responsible for the presence of "SERV CODE", it is necessary to enter the diagnostic scrolling mode or the service mode. Note: In addition to service code indicator, four alert indicators on the main display module of the Caterpillar Monitoring System are used to tell the operator the status of the Power Train Electronic Control System. When a diagnostic code is present, the power train ECM causes the related alert indicator to FLASH on the Caterpillar Monitoring System. The flashing alert indicator is in addition to the SERV CODE indicator. There are four alert indicators that operate in this manner. The indicators are for the following systems: steering system, braking system, transmission system and implement system. For more information, see System Operation, "Warning Operation".The diagnostics of the power train ECM are available to assist with the troubleshooting of detected problems. A diagnostic code is used to specify each detected problem. The diagnostic code consists of three identifiers (MID, CID and FMI). The diagnostic code is shown in the display area of the Caterpillar Monitoring System. The identifiers are listed below: Module Identifier (MID) - The MID is a three digit code that is shown on the message center. The MID specifies the ECM which diagnosed the problem. The MID, the CID, and the FMI are shown at the same time.
