The cleanliness of the engines oil system is critical to the related engine components life and performance. There have been instances when improper cleanliness has allowed debris to enter the oil system. This ultimately led to major component failure and damage of the journal bearings. This procedure documents some of the guidelines that should be followed when the engine is undergoing a major repair. During the repair, debris are produced when the engine components are removed. The related oil systems are then exposed and the oil systems are susceptible to the entrance of debris. This procedure will document the following steps:
Protect the system prior to repair and during repair.
Flush the system prior to reassembly of components.
Determine the cleanliness of the oil system prior to the engine commissioning and after engine repair. This procedure is intended to supplement existing Special Instructions, Engine News, and procedures. Before a major repair, Caterpillar Customer Service or a product support representative be notified of the repair. This procedure may not provide adequate protection for the given repair.Do not perform any procedure that is outlined in this Special Instruction until the entire Special Instruction has been read and understood.System Protection
Foreign debris can enter the oil system in the following locations:
Engine Oil Circuit of the Cylinder Block
Internal Cast Surface of the Cylinder Block
Machined Surfaces of the Cylinder Block
Engine Oil Circuit of the Crankshaft
External Forged Surfaces of the Crankshaft
Machined Surfaces of the Crankshaft
Engine Oil Supply Passages of the Connecting Rod (3618)
External Forged Surfaces of the Connecting Rod
Machined Surfaces of the Connecting Rod
Surfaces of the Journal Bearings
Oil Grooves of the Journal Bearings
Components of the Priority Valve
Engine Oil Circuit of the Priority Valve
Components of the Turbocharger
Engine Oil Circuit of the Turbocharger
Related Fluid Conductors and Connections
Changing of an Oil Filter ElementProtection Steps prior to repairs and protection steps while repairs are being performed.
Prior to taking any engine out of service, use an S O S oil analysis in order to provide a baseline for the cleanliness of the engine oil for a comparison when the repair is completed and the engine is put through the commissioning procedure.
As components are removed from the engine the components must be thoroughly cleaned. All internal oil passages should be plugged and the components protected from contamination if the components will be reused.Use some clean plastic sheeting to protect the clean engine components that will be reused at a later time. Store the clean engine components in a designated storage area during the repair in order to prevent accidental contamination or cross contamination.
