Gas Information
Use clean compressed natural gas or propane as required for your engine.Caterpillar Spark Ignited Engines will operate successfully on clean natural gas, liquid propane, or liquid natural gas. Each fuel requires a unique engine configuration and a set of conditions under which the engine will operate. Successful engine life can be expected only if these conditions are met.Maintain the correct engine timing, air/fuel mixture, and gas pressure for optimum engine life and performance. The Maintenance Schedule intervals are based on using fuels that meet the preferred fuel types listed below. It is imperative that gas being fed to the engine be free of impurities such as solids, water, hydrogen sulfide, etc., as well as being supplied at the minimum acceptable pressure. Each commercial fuel gas is a mixture of combustible and inert gases. These gas mixtures have extreme variations in composition. Most of the fuels used in internal combustion engines, whether liquid or gaseous, are composed primarily of hydrocarbons (hydrogen and carbon). The source of these fuels is generally petroleum. Natural gas is the most popular and widely used of the petroleum gases.Engine performance is to some extent a function of the quality of the fuel used. The engine configuration must be selected to produce the power required with the fuel available in the existing ambient conditions without encountering combustion problems.Use only gas as recommended in this section. Refer to the Engine Technical Manual for (EDS 65.6) Internal Combustion Engine Fuel Gases, form LEKQ9360 and (EDS 65.9) Low Energy Gas Fuels, form LEKX9416 for additional information.Preferred Fuels
* Dry Natural Gas Dry natural gas, also known as commercial pipeline natural gas, is a mixture of methane, ethane, propane, and butane. The contents of propane and butane are less than five percent and one percent respectively, with no more than 10 ppm of hydrogen sulfide (H2S).The reference to "dry" is made because the gas does not contain liquid propane, liquid butane, or other hydrocarbons. The heat content of dry natural gas may change from source to source. Caterpillar-built gas engines are adjusted at the factory with a dry natural gas that has a low heat value of 905 Btu/cu ft (33.72 kJ/L). Local fuel suppliers may refer to a high heat value (HHV) of fuel. Refer to Caterpillar Technical Manual, Engine Data Sheet 65.6, form LEKQ9360 on Internal Combustion Engine Fuel Gases, for comparative information.* Propane Propane is a heavier-than-air gas that is moved in a liquid state to a job location and is transformed into a vapor at the location. Since some states will not permit the use of liquid propane inside a building, Caterpillar's recommendation is to check local building codes before final plans are made for a propane system.Propane, which is 95 percent pure with the remainder no heavier than butane, and meeting the HD-5 (low sulfur) specifications, must be used.* Liquid Natural Gas (LNG)
