The clamshell can swing in all directions.Personal injury can result if it swings into the cab, or a person in the work area.Maintain control of the clamshell at all times.

Uncontrolled movement of the clamshell can cause damage to the cab and to the machine.To avoid damage, use hydraulic controls smoothly to avoid excessive clamshell swing.When traveling, use the clamshell restraint bracket, if equipped.When moving over a rough surface, keep the stick out to prevent the clamshell from swinging into the cab.
Note: Do not use the clamshell restraint bracket in order to lift the machine. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Lifting and Tying Down the Machine".

With the stick in a vertical position, lower the clamshell bucket into the excavation.

For best penetration, apply downward pressure on the control as the clamshell bucket is closed.
When the clamshell bucket is fully closed, raise the boom.

When the bucket is above the excavation, use the swing control. Carefully operate the swing control in order to avoid excessive swing movement.

When you approach the dump area, begin opening the clamshell bucket slowly. Slowly stop the swing movement or the stick motion. Fully open the clamshell bucket.
An experienced operator can use the swinging momentum of the load to throw backfill. This speeds up the cycle. This moves the backfill farther from the excavation.
