Start by:a. Remove front tire and rim assemblies.b. * Install lift arm support stand.*Refer to Install & Remove Lift Arm Support Stand, R1700 Series II L.H.D. Vehicle Systems, Form No. RENR4562 (9EL2026). Fluid Spillage ContainmentCare must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the machine. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids. Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, Caterpillar Tools and Shop Product Guide, for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids in Elphinstone machines. Dispose fluids according to local regulations and mandates. Put identification marks on all lines, on all hoses, on all wires and on all tubes for installation purposes. Plug all lines, all hoses and all tubes. This helps to prevent fluid loss and keep contaminants from entering the system. Perform Step 1 for machines R1700-127 to 147.1. Release the pressure in the brake hydraulic system. Refer to Remove Oil Pressure from the Braking System, R1700 L.H.D. Braking System, Systems Operation, Testing and Adjusting, Form No. RENR4549 (9EL1041). Perform Step 2 for machines R1700-148 & Up.2. Release the pressure in the brake hydraulic system. Refer to Remove Oil Pressure from the Braking System, R1700 L.H.D. Braking System, Systems Operation, Testing and Adjusting, Form No. RENR4596 (9EL7502).
Hot oil and components can cause personal injury. Do not allow hot oil or components to contact skin.
3. Drain the oil from the front axle housing group into a suitable container for storage or disposal. The capacity of the front differential and final drives is 71 liters (18.7 gal). 4. Disconnect the main brake hose assembly from tee (1) (obscured). 5. Remove six bolts (2) and the washers from axle housing breather access cover (3) and remove the cover. 6. Disconnect axle breather hose assembly (4) from the front axle breather assembly.7. Remove bolt (5) and the washer from the clip. 8. Remove four bolts (8), nuts and the washers that hold drive shaft (6) to differential yoke (7). Disconnect the drive shaft from the differential pinion yoke.
Typical Example9. Install Tooling (A) on both sides of the axle assembly as shown. Attach a hoist and suitable chains to Tooling (A). The weight of the front axle group is 1500 kg (3300 lb). 10. Remove locking nuts (11), nuts (9), and the washers from bolts (10) that fasten the front axle housing to the front main frame. When the axle assembly is being lowered guide breather hose assembly (4) through the front frame.11. Place a suitable trolley under the left wheel brake assembly. Lower the axle housing until the brake assembly comes to rest on the trolley. Remove the hoist from the left wheel brake assembly. Use the hoist attached to the right wheel brake assembly to remove the axle housing from under the machine.Install Front Axle Housing Group
