Information:

Retarder
(1) APPLY - Pull lever back to apply retarder.(2) RELEASE - Push lever forward to release retarder. The farther back the handle is pulled, the greater the braking action.Use retarder to lower ground speed or to prevent engine overspeed on a downgrade.Anticipate retarder use. It requires 3 to 4 seconds for retarder to engage after the lever is moved. Use the retarder at least once a week to keep seals lubricated.Accelerator
(1) ENGINE STOPPED - Pull pedal back to detent by hand to stop engine. Pedal will remain in this position until depressed.(2) LOW IDLE - Engine will run at low RPM until pedal is moved manually.(3) HIGH IDLE - Depress and hold pedal for high RPM. Pedal returns to LOW IDLE when released.Transmission Range Selector
(1) REVERSE - Move lever to front of console for reverse.(2) NEUTRAL.(3) FORWARD - Select one of 8 forward speeds by moving lever to the rear. Transmission neutral lock must be OFF and parking brake disengaged to move selector from NEUTRAL.First, second and reverse are torque converter drive and are selected manually.Select the highest usable speed. Transmission will shift up or down automatically depending on ground speed and engine RPM.
Downshift only one speed at a time. Moving shift lever to a lower speed in the automatic range (second through eightH), WILL NOT cause the transmission to downshift.Engine overspeed can result if transmission is shifted into 1st at over 5 mph (8 kph).Engine must be at LOW IDLE and machine stopped before shifting from REVERSE to FORWARD or FORWARD to REVERSE.Do not move range selector with TRANSMISSION HOLD applied.
If machine is inadvertently started in other than NEUTRAL, machine will not move. Move selector to NEUTRAL then to desired range. Contact your Caterpillar Dealer for OPERATING TECHNIQUES OF CATERPILLAR EIGHT SPEED TRANSMISSION, Form No. SEBU5459, for information on using transmission to best advantage.Transmission Neutral Lock
(1) UNLOCK - Push down and to the right to unlock range selector.(2) LOCK - Push down and to the left to lock transmission range selector in NEUTRAL. RANGE SELECTOR must be in NEUTRAL before moving lock lever. The lock prevents the range selector from being moved into gear inadvertently. Engage the lock when leaving operator's station.Variable Capacity Torque Converter (VCTC) Slots
(1) FIRST VCTC(2) SECOND VCTCMove TRANSMISSION RANGE SELECTOR to (VCTC) slots when in first or second speed. The VCTC can be used to prevent wheel slippage when loading, by limiting torque to the drive wheels. This permits operating the engine at higher rpm at a slower ground speed. Hydraulic oil that operates the elevator will be pumped faster, allowing the elevator to operate more efficiently.Transmission Hold
Depress and hold pedal to prevent transmission from shifting up or down.Release pedal to allow transmission to shift automatically.Use transmission hold to prevent unwanted upshifting when loading, dumping or approaching a grade.Differential Lock
Do not attempt to turn the machine with differential lock applied.
Do not apply differential lock with one wheel spinning.
Depress and hold pedal to lock differential.Release pedal to unlock differential. Turning machine slightly may be necessary to
