Information:
Cylinder Block Drain2. Open the system drain valve on radiator and cylinder block to allow the coolant to drain. Open the cab heater valve to flush coolant from the cab heater.3. Allow coolant to drain. Dispose of used engine coolant or recycle. The full distillation procedure is the only method acceptable by Caterpillar to reclaim the used coolant. Contact Caterpillar for information regarding disposal and recycling of used coolant.4. Clean and install all drain plugs and/or close drain valve.Replace Thermostat, Gaskets and Seal
If replacing thermostats ONLY, drain the coolant from the cooling system to a level below the thermostat housing.5. Loosen the hose clamps to disconnect hose assembly from radiator to thermostat housing assembly. Remove the radiator hose from the thermostat housing.6. Remove the thermostat housing and gasket from the engine. Remove thermostat from the housing. Remove lip-type seal from the housing. 7. Replace thermostat, gaskets and seal.Install Thermostat
Caterpillar engines incorporate a shunt design cooling system and require operating the engine with a thermostat installed.
8. Install the seal with the lip of the seal away from the thermostat. Install thermostat in the housing. Install the new gaskets in position between the regulator manifold and the thermostat housing. Install thermostat housing and install the radiator hose and tighten the hose clamps. Refer to the Service Manual for complete procedure to perform this maintenance.Clean/Flush
Use of commercially available cooling system cleaners may cause damage to aluminum cooling system components. Use only cooling system cleaners that are approved for the Cat 3114 and 3116 engines that have aluminum cooling system and engine components.DO NOT use a cooling system cleaner that contains tri-sodium phosphate; it will damage the aluminum components in the engine.
9. Refill the cooling system with clean water mixed with a 6 to 10 percent concentration (3 liter cleaner per 38 liter water [3 U.S. quart cleaner per 10 U.S. gallon water]) of Caterpillar Cooling System Cleaner. Install radiator filler cap. Caterpillar Cooling System Cleaner is available through Caterpillar.10. Start and run the engine to circulate fluid in the cooling system for 30 minutes. Stop the engine, remove radiator filler cap and cooling system drain plugs.Drain Cleaner
11. Drain the cleaning solution. Flush the cooling system with clean water until draining water is clear. Clean and install all drain plugs and/or close the drain valve.Fill
Refer to the Cooling System Specifications in this Manual for all information regarding acceptable water, antifreeze and liquid supplemental coolant additive requirements or contact Caterpillar for assistance. See Refill Capacities chart in this Manual for the capacity of your engine's system.
To prevent engine damage, never add coolant to an overheated engine. Allow the engine to cool first. Fill the cooling system with the coolant solution at 20 liter (5 U.S. gallon) per minute or less to avoid air locks.
12. Add coolant to the system to bring it to the proper level by mixing a solution of acceptable water, Caterpillar Antifreeze (which contains coolant additive) or equivalent.13. Start and run the engine with the filler cap removed. Allow the
