Perform the following procedure in order to flash program the ECM. The ECM is flashed in order to upgrade the software. Flash programming of the ECM must also be done if the ECM has been replaced. When certain types of operational problems are occurring on the machine and a cause cannot be found, flashing the latest software version to the ECM may help to alleviate the problem. Some examples of these types of problems are listed below:
Problems that occur for which no hardware-related cause can be found.
Problems that repeatedly occur and then go away when the key start switch is turned OFF and then turned back ON.
Problems that appear to be caused by the ECM.Before suspecting the ECM as the cause of these types of problems, obtain the latest version of ECM software for your machine configuration. Flash the new software version to the ECM. Operate the machine to determine whether the problem has been corrected. The Cat® Electronic Technician (Cat ET) Service Tool contains the program WinFlash. WinFlash is used to load software into the ECM. The following procedure is used to FLASH software into the ECM.Perform the following procedure in order to flash new software to the ECM.
Procedure
Connect a data link cable between the communication adapter and a computer on which Cat ET has been installed.
Connect a data link cable between the communication adapter and the Diagnostic Service Connector on the machine.
Turn the disconnect switch and the key start switch to the ON position. Do not start the engine.
Set the Lockout Switch to the LOCKED position (if applicable).
Verify that the software file that you are flashing is the latest version for the ECM configuration.
Use Cat ET to establish communication with the ECM that is to be flashed.
Use WinFlash to load the software file to the control module.
After the ECM flash is complete, turn the key start switch to the OFF position. Wait at least 10 seconds.
Turn the key start switch to the ON position for a few seconds. Start the engine. After starting the engine, verify that all machine functions are operating correctly before returning the machine to regular service.
