Ensure that the gauges are in good working order. Determine the normal operating range by observing the gauges over a period of time.Noticeable changes in gauge readings can indicate potential gauge or engine problems. Problems may also be indicated by gauge readings that change even if the readings are within specifications. Determine and correct the cause of any significant change in the readings. Consult your Caterpillar dealer for assistance.Your engine may not have the same gauges or all of the gauges that are described. For information about specific gauges and indicators, see the Operation and Maintenance Manual for the engine's control panel.
If no oil pressure is indicated, STOP the engine. The engine will be damaged from operating without oil pressure.
Engine Oil Pressure - This gauge indicates the pressure of the engine oil. The engine oil pressure will be highest after a cold engine is started. The engine oil pressure will decrease as the engine warms up. The engine oil pressure will increase when the engine rpm is increased. The engine oil pressure will stabilize when the engine rpm is stable.If the load is stable and the engine oil pressure changes, perform the following procedure:
Remove the load.
Reduce the engine rpm to low idle.
Check the oil level. Add oil, if necessary. Low Oil Pressure Indicator - The low oil pressure indicator illuminates when the engine oil pressure is low. The setpoint is programmed at the factory. The setpoint is based on a map of minimum oil pressure versus engine rpm. The setpoint cannot be reprogrammed.Oil Filter Differential Pressure - This gauge indicates the difference in pressure between the inlet side and the outlet side of the oil filter. As the oil filter elements become plugged, the oil filter differential pressure will increase.Engine Oil Temperature - This gauge indicates the temperature of the engine oil after the oil has passed through the oil cooler. The oil temperature is controlled by an 82 °C (180 °F) temperature regulator that is in contact with the oil.The oil cooler transfers heat from the oil to the engine jacket water. If the engine cooling system cannot remove enough heat from the jacket water, the engine oil will not be properly cooled. If the oil temperature is higher than normal, a heat problem has occurred in the lubrication system and/or in the cooling system. This can cause problems with cylinder heads, cylinder liners, pistons, and crankshaft bearings.Jacket Water Temperature - This gauge indicates the temperature of the engine coolant. The inlet temperature of the jacket water is regulated with temperature regulators that are in the cooling system. Never operate the engine without the water temperature regulators.Perform the following procedure if the engine is operating and a high jacket water temperature occurs:
Reduce the load and reduce the engine rpm.
Inspect the cooling system for leaks.
