Information:
Flying Debris Hazard! During operation of the drill, flying debris could be discharged from the drill hole which could result in personal injury or death. Keep cab windows and doors closed during drill operation. Stay clear of the drill discharge area during drill operation.
Before you start drilling, the machine must be level. See this Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Leveling" for information on how to level the machine. Before you start drilling, position the mast at the appropriate angle. Visually verify that the mast lock pins are fully engaged. See this Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Mast Operation" for information on how to position the mast.Drilling
Collaring the Hole
Collaring creates a hole that will help guide the drill pipe with minimal deviation.Note: Collaring depth will vary depending on ground conditions.Collar the hole with a reduced pull down pressure and rotation until the drill bit is engaged in solid rock.Starting a new hole with full rotation and full pull down force may cause the following:
Erratic drill bit movement
Erratic mast movement
Hole deviation
Angle deviation
Enlarged hole
Blocked drill bit nozzles
Damaged drilling componentsFollowing the procedure below to collar the hole:
Lower the drill bit toward the ground.
Turn on the water injection system and set to 50% volume or the dust collector if equipped. This setting can vary with rock conditions.
Turn on the drilling air. Take note of the bit air pressure gauge on the monitor. Refer to this Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Operator Controls" and "Monitoring System" for more information.
Start rotating the drill string clockwise using the rotation lever. The drill should not rotate more than 10 to 20 RPM. Once the hole or collar is started, increase RPM slightly.
Slowly lower the bit to the ground, The depth system will automatically zero.
Using the pulldown rotary controller, slowly feed the drill string until the hole is collared. The hole is collared once the drill has reached solid ground. Collaring must be done slowly and carefully to ensure that the hole is started straightDrilling
Once the hole is collared, continue drilling the hole using the following procedure.
Start increasing the pulldown pressure and rotation speed until a satisfactory penetration rate is reached. The desired penetration rate will depend on ground conditions.Note: Applying excessive weight or using too fast of a rotation speed will result in premature wear to all consumable items.
Engage the auto pulldown function and monitor the rotation pressure and air pressure gauges for abnormal readings. Pulldown pressure and rotation speed need to be continuously adjusted to suit the drilling conditions.Note: If either air pressure or rotation pressure are higher than normal, disengage the pulldown and lift the drill bit off the bottom of the hole. Allow the hole to clear and move the drill up and down to assist in cleaning the hole if necessary. Decrease pulldown pressure if the drill or hole continue to block up.
Reduce the water injection volume.Note: Excessive water injection will reduce drill bit service life. Use the minimum required to suppress the dust or stabilize the hole.
Once the desired depth is reached, disengage the auto pull
