Engine Starting Above 0°C (+32°F)
Personal injury or death can result with improper starting. This machine is equipped with a neutral start switch in the propel system and must never be started by shorting the starter terminals or sudden unexpected movement may occur.Be sure no one is working on or close to the machine before starting the engine or moving the machine. To prevent personal injury, be sure all personnel are clear of the machine. Sound the horn for several seconds before starting the engine.
1. Turn the battery disconnect switch to the right (clockwise) to turn the electrical system on. 2. Engage the parking brake (the internal lamp will turn on when parking brake is engaged). 3. Place the direction and speed control lever in the neutral position. 4. Pull out the throttle control approximately one third of its travel, and lock in position. 5. Turn the engine start switch fully clockwise to start the engine.6. Allow the start switch to return to the center position immediately after the engine has started.
Do not crank the engine for more than 30 seconds. Allow the starter to cool for two minutes before cranking again. Set the engine speed to full throttle before cranking.
Engine Starting Below 0°C (+32°F)
Follow Steps 1 through 6 in Engine Starting Above 0°C (+32°F). Then proceed with the following Steps.
Do not use ether as an engine starting aid. The use of ether will cause engine damage.
1. Open throttle (3) to the fully open position.2. Depress and hold starting aid switch (2).3. Turn engine start switch key (1) to START to crank the engine. ( Heat will be applied to the fuel only while the engine is cranking or running).4. If the engine does not start, disengage the starter and continue to depress the starting aid switch. After waiting 15 seconds, repeat Step 3.5. When the engine starts, continue to depress the starting aid switch until the engine runs smoothly. Set the engine at LOW idle as soon as possible. Release the starting aid switch. For starting below -18°C (0°F), use of optional cold weather starting aids is recommended. A fuel heater, jacket water heater or extra battery capacity may be required. At temperatures below -23°C (-10°F), consult your Caterpillar dealer, or refer to the Operation & Maintenance Manual for Cold Weather Recommendations, SEBU5898, available from your Caterpillar dealer.Engine Starting With Jump Start Cables
Batteries give off flammable fumes that can explode.Prevent sparks near the batteries. They could cause vapors to explode. Do not allow jump start cable ends to contact each other or the machine.Do not smoke when checking battery electrolyte levels.Electrolyte is an acid and can cause personal injury if it contacts skin or eyes.Always wear eye protection when starting a machine with jump start cables.Improper jump start procedures can cause an explosion resulting in personal injury.Always connect battery positive (+) to battery positive (+) and battery negative (-) to battery negative (-).Jump start only with an energy source with the same voltage as the stalled machine.Turn off all lights and
