Removal Procedure
At operating temperature, the engine coolant is hot and under pressure.Steam can cause personal injury.Check the coolant level only after the engine has been stopped and the fill cap is cool enough to touch with your bare hand.Remove the fill cap slowly to relieve pressure.Cooling system conditioner contains alkali. Avoid contact with the skin and eyes to prevent personal injury.
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products.Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.
Drain the cooling system. The capacity of the cooling system is 110 L (29 US gal).

Remove four bolts (1) .
Remove two bolts (2) that hold elbow (5) to cover assembly (3). Remove elbow (5) .
Remove three bolts (4). Remove cover assembly (3), and remove the water temperature regulator from cover assembly (3) .
Remove the lip seal from the cover assembly (3) .Installation Procedure

Lubricate the seal in cover assembly (3) lightly with 1U-6396 O-Ring Assembly Compound. Install the lip seal in cover assembly (3) for the water temperature regulator with Tooling (A) .
Install the seal until the seal makes contact with the counterbore in cover assembly (3). The lip of the seal needs to be facing away from the water temperature regulator.

Install the water temperature regulator and install cover assembly (3). Install three bolts (4) .
Reposition elbow (5). Install two bolts (2) in order to secure elbow (5) to cover assembly (3) .
Install four bolts (1) .
Add the extended life coolant. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Capacities (Refill)".
