Fuel leaked or spilled onto hot surfaces or electrical components can cause a fire. To help prevent possible injury, turn the start switch off when changing fuel filters or water separator elements. Clean up fuel spills immediately.
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products.Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.
Do not loosen the fuel lines at the fuel manifold. The fittings may be damaged and/or a loss of priming pressure may occur when the fuel lines are loosened.
Prime the fuel system in order to fill the fuel filter, and prime the fuel system in order to purge trapped air. The fuel system should be primed under the following conditions:
The fuel tank is running low.
The machine has been stored.
The fuel filter is being replaced.
Unlatch the engine hood and raise the engine hood.

Loosen vent plug (1) on the filter.
Turn priming pump plunger (2) counterclockwise in order to unlock priming pump plunger (2) . Operate priming pump plunger (2) .
Tighten vent plug (1) when the fuel flows without air bubbles.
Push in priming pump plunger (2) and tighten priming pump plunger (2) by hand.
Do not crank the engine continuously for more than 30 seconds. Allow the starting motor to cool for two minutes before cranking the engine again.
Crank the engine. If the engine does not start or if the engine misfires, additional priming is required. Also if the engine emits smoke, additional priming is required.
If the engine starts but the engine runs rough, continue to run the engine at low idle. Run the engine at low idle until the engine runs properly.
Check the fuel system for leaks. Stop the engine.
Close the engine hood and latch the engine hood.
