Adjustment Of Support Bearing Preload And Bevel Gear Backlash Through Side Bores In Differential Case
1. Release the parking brake. Either keep air pressure in the circuit to hold the parking brake in the released position, or remove the cotter pin and pin to disconnect the brake actuator (For 16G Motor Graders, also remove the actuator).2. Remove locks (1) and (2) that hold the nuts (3) and (4) in position (see the illustration). The nuts (3) and (4) are used to adjust both the bearing preload and the bevel gear backlash.
Identification of parts.3. Install one axle shaft from the side nearest the bevel gear. On machines that have no differential, it is necessary only to fit the shaft into the splines of the bevel gear hub on the one side. On machines that have a differential, push the shaft through until the splines are engaged with both side gears. This permits rotation of both bearings during adjustment by the use of a pipe wrench on the one axle shaft.4. Turn the bevel gear and, at the same time, tighten the small nut (4) on the side opposite the bevel gear by hand. The bevel gear and bearings must be turned, or the bearings will not have a good seat. Tighten the nut (4) a small amount, then reverse the rotation of the bevel gear to feel the approximate backlash. Tighten or loosen the large nut (3) on the bevel gear side, and again tighten the small nut (4) until the gear backlash is approximately 0.25 mm (.010").5. When the backlash is approximately 0.25 mm (.010"), turn the bevel gear again and check to be sure the nuts (3) and (4) are tightened as tightly as possible by hand.6. Check the position of large nut (3) and tighten it exactly three notches more, then make alignment marks to show the position of both nuts (3) and (4).7. An exact backlash adjustment must now be made. See the Specifications section of the Service Manual for the specific model of motor grader.8. To measure the bevel gear to pinion backlash, put an 8S2329 Magnetic Base (part of the 8S2328 Dial Test Indicator Group) on the end of the differential housing or bevel gear hub opposite the bevel gear. See the illustration.9. Fasten a 7D2844 Block, or a similar block, to the main frame with one of the final drive mounting studs and a nut. Assemble a dial indicator to the magnetic base so the contact point will make contact with the block at a radius which is the same as the radius of the bevel gear at the centerline of the gear teeth. See the illustration. This will permit the indicator to show the rotation movement of the bevel gear at the centerline of the gear teeth for the correct backlash indication.10. Adjust the nuts (3) and (4) to give the correct backlash specification as shown in the Service Manual. Use the alignment marks (Step 6) to make sure each nut is
