Machine Stopping
With the engine running, this machine spot turns when the steering wheel is turned, even with the transmission in NEUTRAL, the parking brake engaged, and the service brake pedal engaged. To avoid personal injury due to unexpected machine movement, make sure the area is free of personnel before starting the engine.DO NOT STEER when starting the engine. If machine does steer, stop the engine.
Move the machine to a safe location on level ground.1. Pull the governor control lever back or push the decelerator pedal down to decrease engine speed.2. Push brake pedal down or downshift the transmission to slow the machine travel speed.3. Push inching clutch pedal down to disengage the clutch.4. Push brake pedal down all the way to stop the machine.5. Move the transmission control lever to NEUTRAL.6. Engage the parking brake.7. Lower all raised implements to the ground. Apply a slight down pressure. If the engine is to be stopped, operate the engine at LOW IDLE. See the next topic, Engine Stopping.Engine Stopping
Stopping the engine immediately after it has been working under load, can result in overheating and accelerated wear of the engine components.Follow the stopping procedure, outlined below, to allow the engine to cool, and to prevent excessive temperatures in the turbocharger centerhousing which causes oil coking problems.
1. Before stopping the engine, operate at LOW IDLE for five minutes. This allows hot areas in the engine to cool gradually, extending engine life. 2. Turn the engine start switch key to OFF-LOCKED. On the Challenger 65D the throttle lever must be pulled all the way back to engine SHUTOFF position to stop the machine. Turn the start key to OFF position.Leaving Machine
1. Use the steps and handholds. When dismounting, use both hands and face the rear of the machine. 2. Inspect the engine compartment, inside mobile track system, and under fuel tank for debris accumulation. Clean out any debris and paper to avoid a possible fire. 3. If the machine is being parked for an extended period (such as overnight, etc.), remove the engine start switch key. 4. When leaving the machine, lock the cab door.
