Personal injury can result from contact with refrigerant.Contact with refrigerant can cause frost bite. Keep face and hands away to help prevent injury.Protective goggles must always be worn when refrigerant lines are opened, even if the gauges indicate the system is empty of refrigerant.Always use precaution when a fitting is removed. Slowly loosen the fitting. If the system is still under pressure, release it slowly in a well ventilated area.Personal injury or death can result from inhaling refrigerant through a lit cigarette.Inhaling air conditioner refrigerant gas through a lit cigarette or other smoking method or inhaling fumes released from a flame contacting air conditioner refrigerant gas, can cause bodily harm or death.Do not smoke when servicing air conditioners or wherever refrigerant gas may be present.Use a certified recovery and recycling cart to properly remove the refrigerant from the air conditioning system.

If the refrigerant system has been open to the outside air (without being plugged) for more than 30 minutes, the receiver-dryer must be replaced. Moisture will enter an open refrigerant system and cause corrosion which will lead to component failure.
Open the access door on the left side of the machine.
Recover the refrigerant. Refer to Testing and Adjusting, RENR1041, "Refrigerant Recovery" for the proper procedure.
Evacuate the system. Refer to Testing and Adjusting, RENR1041, "Refrigerant System - Evacuate" for the proper procedure.

This is an example of a receiver-dryer that does not have quick couplers.
Remove the receiver-dryer. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Remove and Install Air Conditioner Dryer" for the proper procedure.
Install a new receiver-dryer. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Remove and Install Air Conditioner Dryer" for the proper procedure.
Charge the system with new R-134a refrigerant. Refer to Testing and Adjusting, RENR1041, "Refrigerant System - Charge" for the proper procedure.
Check the entire air conditioning system for leaks.Note: Use a 4C-2964 Electronic Leak Detector to check for leaks.
Close the access door.
