Information:
Refer to Coolant and Your Engine, SEBD0970, or your Caterpillar dealer for additional information.Use the 8T-5296 Coolant Conditioner Test Kit to check for concentration.Add Supplemental Coolant Additive
To prevent overinhibiting the engine's cooling system, never use both the supplemental coolant additive AND the supplemental coolant additive element (if equipped) at the same time.
1. Loosen the radiator filler cap slowly in order to relieve pressure. Remove the cap.2. It may be necessary to drain enough coolant from the radiator to allow for the addition of the supplemental coolant additive (Conditioner).3. Add 0.25 L (0.50 pt) of Caterpillar Supplemental Coolant Additive (Conditioner) for every 38 L (10 U.S. gal) of cooling system capacity. 4. Inspect the radiator filler cap gaskets. Replace the cap if the gaskets are damaged.5. Install the filler cap.Refer to Know Your Cooling System, SEBD0518, Coolant and Your Engine, SEBD0970, or your Caterpillar dealer for more detailed information.Replace Supplemental Coolant Additive Element (If Equipped)
1. Close supplemental additive element inlet valve (1) and outlet valve (2). Remove and discard supplemental additive element (3).2. Clean the element mounting base. Make sure that all of the old gasket is removed.3. Replace with a new Caterpillar coolant additive maintenance element.4. Coat the gasket of a new supplemental additive maintenance element with a thin film of engine oil.5. Install the element. Spin the element until the seal contacts the base. Tighten the element an additional 3/4 turn by hand.6. Open inlet valve (1) and outlet valve (2).7. Remove the radiator filler cap.8. Start the engine and check for leaks. Allow the coolant level to stabilize.9. Add premixed coolant if necessary to bring the coolant to within 13 mm (0.50 in) below the bottom of the filler pipe or to the proper level on the sight glass, if equipped.Crankcase Breather
Clean
Challenger 65D
1. Loosen the breather outlet hose clamp. Remove the hose from the breather assembly.2. Remove the breather assembly.3. Check the condition of cover seal. Replace the used seal with a new seal if the used one is damaged.4. Wash the breather assembly in clean, nonflammable solvent.5. Shake, or use pressure air - 205 kPa (30 psi) maximum, in order to dry the breather assembly.6. Install the clean breather assembly.7. Install the hose and clamp.Challenger 75C and Challenger 85C
1. Loosen hose clamp (1). Remove the hose from the cover.2. Loosen three breather cover bolts (2). Remove cover (3).3. Remove breather element (4). Wash the element in clean, nonflammable solvent and allow the element to dry.4. Install clean, dry breather element (4).5. Install cover (3) and bolts (2).6. Install hose and clamp (1). Tighten clamp (1), refer to topic Torque Specifications for the proper torque of hose clamp - worm drive band type. If the crankcase breather is not maintained on a regular basis, it becomes plugged. A plugged crankcase breather results in excessive crankcase pressure that may cause crankshaft seal leakage.Alternator, Fan and Air Conditioner Belts
Inspect/Adjust
1. Inspect the condition and adjustment of the belts. If the belts are damaged, replace the belts in sets.
