Connections for the Communication Adapter 3 and Cat® Electronic Technician (Cat ET) Service Tool
The components that are needed to use the Communication Adapter III and Cat ET to determine diagnostic codes are listed:

(4) Current version of Cat-ET program software and an IBM-COMPATIBLE personal computerReference: Refer to Special Publication, NEHS0758, "Communications Adapter II User Manual Contains Software".Cat-ET is a software program that is used on an IBM compatible personal computer. Cat-ET is used to communicate with the electronic control module over the data link by connecting to the service connector on the machine. For more information and the locations of the connectors, refer to Troubleshooting, "Connector Locations" and the Electrical System Schematic for the machine.Note: Cat-ET is not required to determine the diagnostic codes. Cat-ET is also not required to clear the diagnostic codes.To use Cat-ET, order the following materials:

Special Publication, JERD2142, "Data Subscription"Note: The Special Publication, JEHP1026, "Information and Requirements Sheet" lists the required hardware and the features of Cat ET.Use the 257-9140 Digital Multimeter for measuring resistance or for measuring voltage. For instructions about the use of the 257-9140 Digital Multimeter, refer to Special Instruction, SEHS7734. The 7X-1710 Multimeter Probe measures the voltage at the connectors without disconnecting the connectors. The probe cables are pushed into the back of the connector along the wire. The 8T-8726 Adapter Cable has a breakout with three pins. The adapter cable is used for measurements in the sensor circuits.For instructions on servicing Sure Seal connectors, refer to Special Instruction, SMHS7531. For instructions on servicing Deutsch connectors, refer to Special Instruction, SEHS9615.Except for harness tests, the use of certain test equipment is not recommended for use on modern Caterpillar electrical circuits. Such testers include the following examples: the 8T-0500 Continuity Tester and 5P-7277 Voltage Tester.Note: A procedure has been developed to test "In Cylinder" Position Sensors. Reference Special Instruction REHS7338, "Procedure to Test the Position Sensor of a Hydraulic Cylinder".
