14 Special Instruction Detailed FMI Explanation
FMI 0 "Data Valid But Above Normal Operating Range" - Every electronic control system sets a high limit for the expected operating range of the signal. The high limit includes over range signals. The problem could be a high temperature. A sensor that is still operating but sending a signal above the expected limit will cause an FMI 0 to be activated. An FMI 0 is activated when the condition is a Level 3 condition (most severe).Some of the conditions that can cause the FMI 0 diagnostic code to be activated are:
The medium or component that is being monitored is above the normal range.
The signal is shorted to another voltage source.
The sensor needs calibration.
An ECM has failed.FMI 1 "Data Valid But Below Normal Operating Range" - Every electronic control system sets a low limit for the expected operating range of the signal. The limit includes signals that are under the lower limit. The low signal could be the oil pressure signal. The sensor is still working but sending a signal below the expected limit will cause an FMI 1 to be activated. An FMI 1 is activated when the condition is a Level 3 condition (most severe).Some of the conditions that can cause the FMI 1 diagnostic code to be activated are:
The medium or component that is being monitored is above the normal range.
Poor connections in the circuit.
The sensor has failed.
An ECM has failed. FMI 2 "Data erratic, intermittent or incorrect" - The signal from a component is present. The control that reads the diagnostic information cannot read the signal properly. The signal appears to be gone, unstable, or invalid. The data can be correct or incorrect intermittently. Also, this condition relates to communication between controls. An example of communication between controls is when the monitoring system is looking for the engine speed from the Engine ECM over the CAT Data Link.Some of the conditions that can cause the FMI 2 diagnostic code to be activated are:
There is a poor connection in the circuit.
The signal is intermittent or erratic.
The software has been changed.
The signal is receiving interference from another circuit.
The signal is out of the range.
An ECM has failed.FMI 3 "Voltage Above Normal" - The component or system voltage is higher than the limit. An FMI 3 most often relates to a signal circuit.Some of the conditions that could cause an FMI 3 diagnostic code to be activated are listed
