Installation Of Pinion Group Parts
1. Press both pinion bearing cups (B1 and B2) into the pinion housing. See Illustration 1. Check to see that each cup face is fully seated against the housing shoulder.
Illustration 1. Typical cross-section of assembled pinion parts using the double locknut and separate lock configuration.2. Without preheating, press B1 cone on the pinion shaft and be sure it is against the shoulder. Lubricate the bearing assembly with the lubricant to be used in the differential.OR
2a. Preheating of the cones and precooling of the cups can be used if desired. Limit cone preheating to 135°C (275°F), and use a suitable driver or press after the parts have cooled to a uniform temperature. This is to ensure that the bearing cone and/or cup is properly seated against the shoulder of mating parts after they have cooled.
Do not exceed four hours maximum heat time on the bearings during preheating.
3. Insert the shaft and B1 cone into the housing and press B2 cone on the shaft. Leave some end clearance in the bearings. Lubricate this bearing assembly.Using Rotating Torque To Set Pinion Bearing Preload
The desired preload torque for the pinion bearings (B1, B2) is listed in the preceding chart. This is the torque required to turn ONLY the pinion shaft completely assembled in its housing (NOT turning the bevel gear). Also, note the amount of torque to be subtracted if you are working with used bearings.
For Pinions With Two Locknuts With Separate Lock, Or one Locknut With Separate Lock (Illustration 1)
1. Tighten first locknut tight and loosen about 1/8 turn.2. Install the lock and the second locknut.3. Tighten second nut against first nut to a minimum torque of 130 N m (95 lb ft), plus the amount needed to align the lock tang with the next slot in the nut. On early 988B Loaders, only one locknut with a separate lock is used. Tighten this nut and loosen 1/8 turn, plus the amount needed to align the lock tang with the next slot in the nut. Then install the remaining parts with the seal lip toward the bearings. No shims are needed under this retainer.4. Install the seal with the lip toward the bearings.5. Check the preload on pinion bearings (B1 and B2) by measuring the torque needed to turn the complete assembly. See chart. Be sure the torque wrench is at the center of the shaft.6. If the preload torque is too much, loosen the nuts, or nut, only 1/8 turn. Reseat B2 cone by striking the splined end of the shaft. Check preload torque again. Reseat B2 cone again if necessary to obtain the correct preload torque.7. Check the shaft to be sure there is zero end clearance. For Pinions With A Shimmed Yoke (Illustration 2)
This applies to 825C and 826C Compactors. A spacer is used in place of the locknut(s).
Illustration 2. With this pinion, the rotating torque is adjusted by the shims under the yoke retainer.1. Install the seal, yoke, retainer, and the three bolts without
