The fuel priming pump is located on the left side of the engine behind the fuel filter housing.

The vent screw for the fuel pump is located on the fuel inlet connection of the fuel pump.
Turn the vent screw for two or three revolutions counterclockwise. Turning the vent screw will allow air in the fuel system to escape. This will allow the fuel system to be primed.
In order to prime the fuel system, you must pump the lever on the fuel priming pump. Continue to pump the lever in order to fill the filter element. Pump the lever until fuel that is free of air flows from the vent screw. Tighten the vent screw to 6 1 N m (4.4 0.74 lb ft).Note: The engine is most easily primed if the drive cam of the pump is at the point of minimum lift. If you are not able to prime the engine, consult your Caterpillar dealer.
Start the engine. If the engine will not start, further priming is necessary. If the engine starts but the engine continues to misfire, further priming is necessary. If the engine starts but the engine continues to emit smoke, further priming is necessary.
If the engine starts but the engine runs rough, continue to run the engine at low idle. Continue to run the engine at low idle until the engine runs smoothly.
