Explorer II Training Unit
The Explorer II Hydraulic System Training Unit consists of a steel A-frame, with industrial grade hydraulic components, that are hard mounted to the front panel. Additional components and hydraulic hoses are stored either behind the panel or in the drawer. The components of the fluid supply system, excluding the pump assembly, are permanently plumbed behind the panel. The pump assembly is an optional feature that will not be discussed here.System Components
Illustration 1 g01058162
In order to effectively use the system, you need to become familiar with the names and the locations of all system components. The hard mounted components are labeled on the panel, as shown in Illustration 1. You should study this illustration before you try to build a hydraulic circuit.Explorer II Training Unit Rear Panel
Illustration 2 g01058258
The rear panel of the Explorer II system is shown in Illustration 2. Connect a hose from the pump and the tank unit to pressure port (P) on the rear panel. Connect a hose from return port (T) on the rear panel to the return port on the pump and the tank unit. These connections are used for supplying fluid to the panel. A power cord is used to provide electricity for the pump and the tank unit. ALWAYS plug the power cord into a grounded 115 VAC receptacle. NEVER use an ungrounded power source.Another power cord provides electricity to the converter for the 24 VDC power supply. When you are facing the unit, the toggle switch for the 24 VDC power supply is on the right hand end of the A-frame. A yellow indicator light turns on when there is power to the 24 VDC jacks and the switch. The fuse case holds a 1 amp fuse for the power supply unit. The Explorer II training unit has a backup relief valve in the pump and the tank unit. The valve should be set to 6890 kPa (1000 psi) before any training is done on the unit. Students should not adjust this valve at any time. The system relief valve should control the maximum pressure in the system. Although the Explorer II training unit pressure does not exceed 6890 kPa (1000 psi), the hydraulic system stores a lot of energy. The unit must be turned off and the pressure must be relieved before you remove any hoses or any components from the unit.Explorer II Couplings and Hoses
Illustration 3 g01058259
The Explorer II hoses are fitted with quick disconnect couplings. The couplings have built in ball checks in order to prevent fluid from leaking out of the hoses when they are disconnected. The following procedures are used to connect a hose to a component:
Slide back the outer sleeve of the coupling on the hose, as shown in Illustration 3.
Press the coupling firmly onto the nipple on the component.
Release the outer sleeve in order to secure the coupling to the nipple. The following procedures are used to remove a hose from a component:
Slide back the outer sleeve of the coupling.
The coupling will immediately be forced off
