Dear Caterpillar Product Owner:
The retarder breather line needs to be rerouted on the products listed below. The existing routing has the possibility of cross contamination in the differential case. You will not be charged for the service performed.
Contact your local Caterpillar dealer immediately to schedule this service. The dealer will advise you of the time required to complete this service.
Please refer the dealer to their Service Letter dated 11Aug2008 when scheduling this service.
We regret the inconvenience this may cause you, but urge you to have this service performed as soon as possible to prevent unscheduled downtime.

Rework Procedure
Refer to the Service Manual if/as necessary.
Some units may have already been detected for improper routings and fixed in the field. The correct routing is shown in Images 1.3.1 and 1.3.2.
For removal, please refer to Image 1.1.1 and Image 1.1.2.
1. Remove the existing 152-3832 hose (1) from the 8W-8477 drive shaft housing connector and discard. Do not remove or discard the 8C-6872 Connector (2) at the housing. Remove the hose from the mounting clip and also from the differential breather tee fitting on the differential housing. Retain the 5M-3062 Bolt and 8T-4896 Washer for the clip to be used later.
2. Remove the existing 4Y-6343 Differential Breather Hose (3), 148-8358 Elbow (5), 6V-9157 Adapter (6), 1N-8559 Tee, and 148-8345 Connector (7) from the differential housing. None of the parts except the 1N-8559 Tee Fitting will be reused. The tee fitting will be reused on the transmission breather connection. Leave the breather and its connections in tact.
3. Remove the existing 222-0377 Transmission Breather Hose (4), 6V-9157 Adapter (8), and the 148-8345 Connector (9) from the transmission housing. These parts will not be reused. Leave the breather and its connections in tact.

For installation of nuts (bosses), please refer to Image 1.2.1.
4. Install the two 5F-7844 Nuts (Bosses)(10). Center point will be the back hole for the 255-9269 Bar on top of the case as shown in Image 1.2.1. The 255-2343 Bracket that holds the 236-9827 Hydraulic Tube on mounts to this bar. Weld bosses to the case using E7018 welding electrode and a 3 mm weld bead. Refer to Steps #5 and #6 and also Image 1.2.1.
5. Position the rear most boss 382.7 +/- 3 mm from the rear centerline bolt hole of the left side bar back and 11 +/- 3 mm to the left of the bar as shown in Image 1.2.1.
6. Position the front boss 144.2 +/- 3 mm from the rear centerline bolt hole of the left side bar back and 16 +/- 3 mm to the left of the bar.
