Personal injury or death can result if spilled fuel ignites. Fuel leaked or spilled onto hot surfaces or electrical components can cause a fire.To help prevent possible injury, turn the battery disconnect switch to the OFF position when changing fuel filters or water separator elements. Clean up fuel spills immediately.
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products.Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.
Do not fill fuel filters with fuel before installing them. The fuel will not be filtered and could be contaminated. Contaminated fuel will cause accelerated wear to fuel system parts. The fuel system should be primed prior to starting the engine.
Prepare the machine for maintenance. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Prepare the Machine for Maintenance".

Stop the engine and close fuel shutoff valve (1) .

The primary fuel filters (water separator) are located behind the fuel tank. The fuel tank has been removed for ease of viewing.
Remove the fuel/water separator elements (2) with a strap type wrench. Discard the used elements properly.
Clean the mounting base. Make sure that both of the old seals are removed.
Lubricate the seals of the new elements with clean diesel fuel.
Install the new elements by hand until the seal contacts the mounting base. Note the position of the index marks on the elements in relation to a fixed point on the mounting base.Note: There are rotation index marks on each filter that is spaced 90 degrees (1/4 turn) away from each other. When you tighten the elements, use the rotation index marks as a guide.
Tighten all filters according to the instructions that are printed on the filter.Note: You may need to use a strap type wrench or a suitable tool in order to turn the filters to the amount that is required for final installation. Make sure that the installation tool does not damage the filters.
Open the fuel shutoff valve.
Prime the fuel system.For information on priming the fuel system, refer to the Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Fuel System - Prime".
Start the engine and inspect the filter for leaks. Make any necessary repairs. If the engine has a loss of power or the exhaust smoke is still black, replace the secondary filters.
