Check 876439 Reach Boom (R-Boom) or 4I3000 Mass Boom (M-Boom) for the date code which is stamped on the top plate of the boom foot. See Illustration 1. The first three characters will be numeric, followed by an alpha character. Enter a SIMS report noting the date code of the boom.
Illustration 1Check the boom for cracks near both the front and rear baffle plates. Refer to the Illustration 2. Rework both boom baffle plate areas according to the appropriate rework procedure. If there are cracks near both rear and front baffle plates, use "Rework Procedure for Cracked Baffle Plate Area" on both. If only one area is cracked, use "Rework Procedure for Cracked Baffle Plate Area" on it. Use "Rework Procedure for Baffle Plate Area that is not Cracked " for the other plate area that has not cracked.
Illustration 2Welding Instructions
For stringers use .052" diameter solid wire at 350 IPM and 27 volts 1 volt. Shielding gas at 40 CFH Argon-CO2.
For finish welding use .052" diameter solid wire at 450 IPM and 30 volts 1 volt. Shielding gas at 40 CFH Argon-CO2.
These electrodes fulfill the minimum requirements providing for the welding of hardenable steels with a low-hydrogen process. The weld properties and penetration capabilities may vary greatly depending on the electrode diameter, shielding gas, welding current, plate thickness, joint geometry, surface condition, and composition of the base metal and electrode. The weld metal chemistry will not vary appreciably from the electrode composition when used with Argon-CO2 shielding gas (with a 10% CO2 maximum.), but will show a considerable decrease in manganese, silicon, and other deoxidizers with increasing levels of CO2.
Electrodes meet AWS specification A5.18-69.
- Maintain 3 mm minimum root opening on all cross welds and circle welds.- Position booms to weld in flat or horizontal.- 0.8 mm maximum grinding undercut allowed.- All body welds (side plates to top and bottom plates) should be welded in the direction from the rear of the boom towards the front of boom.- All cross welds and body welds should have a root pass applied before finish welding. This will help lock frame together and help reduce distortion.Needle Peening Instructions
A. The needle peener should be of the multiple needle configuration. The needles should be 3 mm in diameter and must be rounded on the end which contacts the surface to be peened.B. Air pressure - 550 kPa (80 psi) minimum/690 kPa (100 psi) maximum.C. Peening time - 5 s/25 mm minimum.D. Peening shall not be done above 400 degrees C or below 5 degrees C.E. Welds should be processed in the flat position if possible. If peened in the horizontal position the weld deposit should not exhibit any sign of rollover at the toe of the weld. The needle peener should be held perpendicular to the weld face and adherent surface.F. The weld should be needle peened for a sufficient
