Transmission System
Check Oil Level
The transmission oil dipstick and filler tube are located on the left side of the machine, in front of the cab.1. Measure the transmission oil level with the engine stopped and the oil cold. The oil level should be between the ADD and FULL marks on the ENGINE STOPPED side of the dipstick. With the engine running, the oil level should be between the ADD and FULL marks on the LOW IDLE side of the dipstick.2. Remove the filler plug/dipstick and add oil if necessary.3. Clean and install the filler plug/dipstick.Steering/Hydraulic System
Check Oil Level
Because of the varied number and sizes of hydraulic cylinders used on farm implements, the position of the implement (whether raised or lowered) can affect the hydraulic oil level in the tank. This could lead to inconsistent and/or incorrect oil level indications on the sight gauge. Therefore, the hydraulic oil level should always be checked with the implement in the position in which it is normally stored when the implement is not being used. Maintain the oil level between the ADD and FULL marks on sight gauge (1).If oil is needed, raise walkway (2) in order to gain access to the hydraulic filler cap. Add oil as necessary.
DO NOT overfill the hydraulic tank. Leaving all implements in their existing unhooked positions will minimize the possibility of overfilling.
Radiator
Check Coolant Level
The sight gauge is visible from the left side of the machine on the Challenger 65D, or from the right side of the machine on the Challenger 75D/Challenger 85D. The sight gauge is located on the rear of the radiator. If coolant level is low: The radiator cap is located and accessible on the top left side of the hood.1. Remove the radiator cap slowly in order to relieve any pressure.2. Inspect the plate inside the filler tube in order to determine the coolant level. The coolant should be level with the horizontal portion of the plate. Add coolant if necessary.3. Add coolant as necessary to maintain the level in the green range of the sight gauge when the machine is level.4. Inspect the cap seal. Replace the cap if damaged.5. Install the cap.Service Brakes
Test
With the engine off, the pedal should move with light pedal effort for approximately half of the total travel. At this point, pedal effort should increase substantially. If the pedal is spongy throughout the entire travel range and hits the pedal stop, consult any Caterpillar dealer, or refer to the service manual for brake bleeding procedures and troubleshooting. Do not operate the machine until the brakes are functioning properly. The master cylinder is a two stage design. the first stage displaces volume to take up brake disc clearance. The second stage develops the clamping pressure. With this type of design, substantial brake pedal movement occurs before braking action commences. This action is normal and the brakes are operating as intended.Check Fluid Level
On all machines, maintain fluid level between the LOW and FULL marks.
