Hot oil and hot components can cause personal injury. Do not allow hot oil or hot components to contact the skin.
Obtain S O S samples as close as possible to the recommended sampling interval. In order to receive the full effect of S O S analysis, a consistent trend of data must be established. In order to establish a pertinent history of data, perform consistent samplings that are evenly spaced. Supplies for collecting samples can be obtained from your Caterpillar dealer.

Park the machine on a level surface with filler plug (1) slightly above the centerline on one of the final drives.
Prepare the machine for maintenance. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Prepare the Machine for Maintenance".
Remove the filler plug and obtain an oil sample for the final drive with a sampling gun through the filler plug opening. Install the filler plug.
Repeat steps 1 through 3 for the other final drive. Obtain a separate oil sample for each final drive. Refer to the following publications for S O S information:
