Component Code: 1900SUBJECT: Single Side Band (SSB) Radio Interference with the Caterpillar Multi-Station Control System on Marine Engines.
PROBLEM:
Certain Single Side Band (SSB) radios may interfere with engine speed control and troll valve functions. The interference from the SSB radio will cause the engine ECM to reduce the desired engine speed to low idle while the radio is in use. Also, the Electro-Magnetic Interference (EMI) emitted from the radio will cause the trolling function to reduce to full slip if troll is in use.
SOLUTION:
The following diagram shows the "Port ECM/ETP" and the "Starboard ECM/ETP" connectors with the negative (black) battery wire removed from pin 4 of both connectors. The "Port ECM/ETP" and the "Starboard ECM/ETP" connectors are 12 pin Deutsch type connectors. A short 18-gauge jumper wire must be assembled with a Deutsch style connector pin on each end of the jumper wire. One end of the jumper wire must be placed into pin 4 of the Deutsch 12 pin connector and the other end of the jumper must be placed into pin 11 of the Deutsch 12 pin connector. At the present time, no wire is installed in pin 11 of the 12 pin Deutsch connector from the factory. Once this procedure is completed, the problem should eliminate throttle instability when the radio is used.
If the propeller shaft speed decreases along with the gear pressure degrading when the SSB radio is used, but returns to normal operation when the radio is not being used, new Electronic Troll Processors (256-4883) should be installed.
