Diesel engine exhaust contains products of combustion which may cause personal injury.Always start and operate the engine in a well ventilated area, and, if in an enclosed area, vent the exhaust to the outside.
The machine will not start unless the following conditions exist:
The transmission control lever is in the NEUTRAL position.
The engine speed is 0 rpm.
The prelubrication of the engine is complete or the prelubrication system is turned OFF.Note: If the machine must be started immediately, you can override the engine prelubrication system. Return the key to the OFF position in order to stop the engine prelubrication. Turn the key back to the START position in order to immediately start the engine. If you have not turned the key back to the START position within 10 seconds after you have ended the engine prelubrication, the engine prelubrication will be reactivated. If you override the prelubrication system, a prelube override event will be logged in the engine ECM.
Adjust the operator's seat. Adjust the mirrors.
Fasten the seat belt.
Do not allow a companion to ride on the machine unless the companion is seated within the Rollover Protective Structure (ROPS) or Falling Object Protection Structure (FOPS) with the seat belt fastened. The companion must have the seat belt fastened while the machine is in operation. The operator of the machine is responsible for the safety of the companion. Personal injury or death may occur if the companion is not restrained and protected.
Note: Before you start the engine, wait for the self test of the Caterpillar Monitoring System. The self test will activate when the engine start switch is turned to the ON position. See Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Caterpillar Monitoring System - Self Test" in this section for further information.

Move the transmission control lever (1) to the NEUTRAL position.
Engage parking brake switch (2) .

The dump body should be down and hoist control (3) should be in FLOAT position. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Hoist Control" for more information.
Make sure that no one is on the machine, underneath the machine or around the machine. Make sure that there are no personnel in the area.
Sound the horn.
Excessive ether (starting fluid) can cause piston and ring damage. Use ether for cold weather starting purposes only.

Leave ether starting aid switch (4) in the AUTO position. Turn engine start switch (5) to the START position.Note: Only use the manual ether injection for cold weather starting.Note: If the machine must be started immediately, you can override the engine prelubrication system.
