Illustration 1 g00576448In order to check the operation of the VIMS, observe the self test when the engine start switch is turned from the OFF position to the ON position.The VIMS will perform an automatic self test at start-up whenever the engine start switch is turned to the ON position. First, the VIMS calibrates the gauge cluster and the tachometer. Before the beginning of the system test, the gauge cluster and the tachometer go from the initial value to zero. Then, the VIMS performs a test.The self test is a test of the display components. The self test will last for 4 - 6 seconds. The action alarm will sound during this self test. The action light will be powered during the self test. The backlighting of the ground speed readout and of the actual gear readout will be powered during the self test. The backlighting of message center (2) will be powered during the self test. It is important for the operator to visually inspect the LED lights during the self test. If the LED lights do not come on during powerup, or if the LED lights glow dimly during the self test, find the cause immediately.The following series of events will occur during the self test of the VIMS:
Alert indicator (1) flashes.
Data logging indicator (4) scrolls.
Universal gauge (3) starts at zero and sweeps to full scale.
Gauge warning area (5) that is on each end of the universal gauge is turned to the ON position.
Message area (6) shows the following information:Configuration software - Several numbers and/or letters followed by a "C".Source code software - Several numbers and/or letters followed by a "S".Hardware - Several numbers and/or letters followed by an "H".
The level of the tachometer rises from zero to the top of the scale. Then, the level of the tachometer returns to zero or to the current engine rpm.
The ground speed indicator turns on every segment of the readout. Then, the readout appears to read "188".
The actual gear indicator for the transmission turns on every segment of the readout. Then, the readout appears to be a "0" with an "X" and a "+" sign on top of the "0". There should be two of these symbols.
The external lights for the payload blink.
The action light is continually on.
The action alarm SOUNDS.
The gauge cluster goes from zero to the top of the scale. Then, the level of the gauge cluster shows the current values of the machine.
The service light flashes one time if no events are present. The service light flashes three times if any events are logged.If all of the checks and all of the fluid levels are correct, the time and the service meter hours will be displayed on message area (6).If the above test is completed, turn the engine start switch to the START position.If the test is not completed or problems are noted, consult your Caterpillar dealer.Message area (6) will display the time and the service meter hours when the engine is running and when no
