Remove the cylinder head. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly , "Cylinder Head - Remove".
Remove the piston cooling jets. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Piston Cooling Jets - Remove and Install.".
If necessary, remove the engine oil cooler. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Engine Oil Cooler Remove".
If necessary, remove the engine oil pump. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly , "Engine Oil Pump - Remove".
If necessary, remove the auxiliary water pump. Refer to "Disassembly and Assembly""Auxiliary Water Pump - Remove".
Keep all parts clean from contaminants. Contaminants may cause rapid wear and shortened component life.
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting, and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids. Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, “Cat dealer Service Tool Catalog” for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products. Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.
Note: The front end of the engine is the end that is opposite of the flywheel. The number one cylinder is the right front cylinder and the number two cylinder is the front left cylinder.
Remove the cover from the front right side of the flywheel housing. Use Tooling (A) to rotate the flywheel until all four bolts in the connecting rod cap can be removed.
Mark the cylinder number on each connecting rod and on the corresponding connecting rod cap.

Remove four bolts (1) and connecting rod cap (2).

Push the piston (3) out of the cylinder block until the piston rings are out of the cylinder liner.
Remove the piston (3) and connecting rod assembly.

Use Tooling (B) to remove the retaining rings (4) that hold the piston pin (5).
Remove the piston pin (5).
Remove piston (7) from connecting rod (8).
Use Tooling (C) to remove the piston rings (6) from the piston (7).
Clean the piston ring grooves with an acceptable ring groove tool. Refer to Reuse and Salvage Guidelines, SEBF8059, “Inspection Procedures and Specifications for Pistons”.

Raise the temperature of distance, (Z) of the connecting rod to 217.5° 42.5°C (423.5° 108.5°F)to assemble bearing, or cool bearing (9) to −85° 5°C (−121° 23°F)prior to installation in a room temperature rod.
Use Tooling (D) to push the new piston pin bearing (9) into the connecting rod.
Refer to Special Instruction SESH-7295-03 , "Use of Piston Bearing Removal and Installation Tools" for more information.
