The tamper system assists with the initial compaction of the asphalt mat during the paving operation. The machine must be in the PAVE mode and the machine must be operating in the forward direction for the tamper to operate. Refer to Propulsion Control System for additional information. The tamper hydraulic system is a closed circuit hydrostatic drive loop. A single variable displacement pump with an integral charge pump provides flow to four tamper motors. The tamper pump is controlled by an electronic displacement control unit (EDC) that is controlled by the machine's electronic control system. A programmable time delay allows the machine to begin moving before the tamper starts.
