The converter housing is bolted to the flywheel housing. Output torque from the converter enters the planetary transmission through either the No. 1 or No. 2 sun gear. The gear that receives the output is dependent upon the direction clutch that is engaged.Oil for the operation of the converter is supplied by the transmission oil pump. The converter inlet oil pressure is controlled by the torque converter ratio valve for the torque converter. The valve limits the pressure to the converter to a maximum of 980 kPa (142 psi) when the oil is cold. The valve is part of the selector and pressure control valve in the transmission hydraulic controls.The outlet oil pressure is controlled by the relief valve for the torque converter outlet. The torque converter outlet relief valve is mounted on the torque converter case. The valve maintains converter outlet pressure at 415 kPa (60 psi).Rotating housing (1), impeller (2), and oil pump drive gear (3) are driven by the flywheel, and all three rotate as a unit at engine speed.Oil from the transmission hydraulic controls enters the torque converter through inlet port (4) in carrier (8). Oil is directed through gear (3) and impeller (2) by a passage and into the converter.As impeller (2) rotates, the impeller acts as a pump to direct oil to turbine (6). The turbine is riveted to a hub, which is connected to output shaft (5) by splines. The turbine directs oil to stator (7), which is held stationary. The stator is connected to carrier (8) by bolts. Carrier (8) is bolted to the torque converter housing.The oil flows through a passage in carrier (8) to outlet port (9). From outlet port (9), oil is directed to the converter outlet relief valve. All the oil from the outlet relief valve flows to the oil cooler and the temperature of the oil is lowered. From the oil cooler, the oil is then sent to the transmission and the oil is used for cooling and lubricating the internal components.
