Information:
20. Remove nuts (32). Remove the ring gear from the housing. 21. Remove thrust washer (33) and gear (34).22. Remove the gears and spiders as a unit. 23. Remove the washers, gears and bearings from the spider. 24. Remove gear (34) from the housing. 25. Remove thrust washer (35) from the housing. 26. Remove bearing cone (36) from the housing with tooling (D). 27. Turn the carrier assembly over as shown. Remove the bolts and locks that hold retainer (37) in position. Install two 1/2" - 13 NC forcing screws in the retainer. Tighten the screws evenly until the retainer is loose.28. Remove O-ring seal (39) from the retainer. Check the condition of the seal. If the seal has damage, use a new part for replacement.29. Remove shims (38). 30. Remove bearing cup (40) from the retainer with tooling (E). 31. Remove the seal from the retainer with tooling (F). 32. Remove pinion assembly (41) from the carrier assembly.33. Remove bearing cup (42) from the carrier assembly. 34. Remove the seal ring from the pinion assembly. 35. Remove the large bearing cone from the pinion with tooling (G). 36. Remove the small bearing cone from the pinion with tooling (H). 37. Remove tube assembly (43) from the carrier assembly.Assemble Differential
1. Install the tube assembly on the carrier assembly. 2. Lower the temperature of the bearing cup for the pinion assembly. Install the bearing cup in the carrier assembly with tooling (B) until it makes contact with the counterbore in the carrier assembly. 3. Heat the large bearing cone (44) to a maximum temperature of 135° C (275° F) and install it on pinion (45) as shown. Turn the pinion over. Heat the small bearing cone to a maximum temperature of 135° C (275° F) and install it on the pinion.4. Install pinion (45) in the carrier assembly as shown. Install seal ring (46) on the pinion.5. Lower the temperature of the bearing cup for retainer (37). Install the cup in the retainer until it makes contact with the counterbore in the retainer. 6. Make an adjustment to the bearing preload for the pinion assembly as follows:a. Install the retainer without an O-ring seal and shims over the pinion assembly. Install the bolts that hold the retainer. Tighten the bolts evenly.b. Fasten tooling (J) to the pinion assembly. Tighten the bolts that hold the retainer evenly until the torque needed to turn the pinion assembly is 2.3 0.6 N m (20 5 lb in). Use tooling (J) to turn the pinion assembly. Measure the distance between the retainer and carrier assembly with a feeler gauge. Make a record of the distance measured. Remove tooling (J) and the retainer.7. Install the seal in retainer (37).8. Install O-ring seal (39) on the retainer.9. Install the amount of shims (38) that was measured in Step 6b on the carrier assembly. Install retainer (37) and the bolts that hold it over the pinion assembly. 10. Turn the differential carrier housing over
