Personal injury can result from hydraulic oil pressure and hot oil. Hydraulic oil pressure can remain in the hydraulic system after the engine has been stopped. Serious injury can be caused if this pressure is not released before any service is done on the hydraulic system. Make sure all of the attachments have been lowered, and the oil is cool before removing any components or lines. Remove the oil filler cap only when the engine is stopped, and the filler cap is cool enough to touch with your bare hand.
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the machine. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any component or disassembling any component containing fluids. Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide", for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids in Caterpillar machines. Dispose of fluids according to local regulations and mandates.
The R1600 LHD axle housings and final drives retain a constant pressure inside the housings. Care must be taken when removing filler and drain plugs. Remove plugs slowly to vent axle housings and relieve pressure.
The drive axle shafts may be removed with the axle assembly installed or removed from the machine. If the drive axle shafts are being removed with the axle assembly installed in the machine, make sure the machine is parked on a level surface and the tires are blocked to prevent movement. 1. Move the machine to put final drive drain plug (2) in the position shown. Remove drain plug (2) and drain the oil from the final drive into a suitable container for storage or disposal.2. Remove the bolts that hold final drive cover (1) to the final drive housing.3. Remove final drive cover (1) and the O-ring seal. 4. Install a 1/2 inch - 13 NC forged eye bolt (3) in the end of the axle as shown. Pull the axle out of the final drive until a hoist can be fastened to it. If the axle shaft can not be removed from the final drive, release the parking brakes or move the machine a small amount to the front or rear until the axle shaft can be pulled free from the final drive. 5. Attach a suitable lifting strap and hoist and remove axle shaft (4) from the machine. The weight of axle shaft (4) is approximately 20 kg (44 lb). 6. Remove retainer ring (5) and gear (6) from the end of axle shaft (4). Installation Procedure
1. Make sure axle shaft (4) is clean and free of dirt and foreign material. 2. Attach a suitable lifting strap and hoist and put axle shaft (4) in position. 3. Install gear (6) half way on the axle.4. Put a piece of pipe (7) which has a 5.1 cm (2 inch) outside diameter and 61 cm (24 inch) long in the end of gear (6) as shown. Push down on the pipe
