Schematic of the Transmission Direction Solenoid Valve (Reverse) (1) Transmission direction solenoid valve (Reverse). (2) Power train Electronic Control Module (ECM).The CID 0642 FMI 06 diagnostic code is recorded when the current of the solenoid circuit is above normal. The power train electronic control module (ECM) detects the fault. Transmission direction solenoid valve (1) is located on the transmission control valve.Note: Ensure that the diagnostic code CID 0642 FMI 06 for the solenoid is active. Before you perform this procedure, refer to Table 1 in order to determine the contact on the connector and the wire number that corresponds to the failed circuit.
Table 1
Information on Direction Solenoid Valve
Fault    Connector Contact No. (1)    Wire No.
Transmission Direction Solenoid Valve (Reverse)     J1-4     752-YL
( 1 ) Connector contact of the power train ECM.Note: All the solenoid return lines are joined together. The lines connect to contact J1-7 on connector J1 of power train ECM (2) (wire 975-WH).
Check for a shorted coil on the transmission direction solenoid valve (Reverse).
Turn the key start switch and the battery disconnect switch to the OFF position.
Disconnect the machine harness from the suspected solenoid.
At the connector for transmission direction solenoid valve (1), measure the resistance between contact 1 and contact 2. The resistance should be about 30 Ohms.Expected Result: The resistance is about 30 Ohms. Results:
OK - There is about 30 Ohms between the contacts. Proceed to Step 2.
NOT OK - The resistance is less than 30 Ohms. Replace the coil on the suspected solenoid. STOP.
Check the machine harness for a short to ground.
The key start switch and the battery disconnect switch remain in the OFF position.
Disconnect the suspected solenoid from the machine harness.
Disconnect the machine harness connector J1 from power train ECM (2) .
At the machine harness connector J1, measure the resistance from the solenoid signal contact to all possible sources of ground. The following contacts on connector J1 are possible ground sources 2, 5, 7, 15, and 16. Refer to Table 1 for the solenoid signal contact.Expected Result: Each resistance should be greater than 5000 Ohms. Results:
OK - The machine harness is correct. Go to Step 3.
NOT OK - There is a short in the machine harness. The machine harness is faulty. A short circuit exists to ground. The short is between the solenoid and the power train ECM. Replace the machine harness or repair the machine harness. STOP.
Check if the fault is still present.
Inspect the contacts and clean the contacts of the harness connectors.
Reconnect all harness connectors.
Turn the battery disconnect switch to the ON position.
Start the engine.
Enter the service mode of the Caterpillar Monitoring System. Clear all inactive faults.
Attempt to operate the machine in all gears. All gears may not be available.
Stop the machine.
Check for the CID 0642 FMI 06 diagnostic code for the solenoid.Expected Result: The CID 0642 FMI 06 diagnostic code for the solenoid is active. The "SERV CODE" is showing in the display. Results:
YES - The fault has not been corrected. It is unlikely
