HEAD 4L3800 - Caterpillar

Start By:
Remove the tire and rim. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Tire and Rim - Remove and Install".
Remove the axle shaft. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Axle Shaft - Remove".Note: The following procedure is performed on the front axle. Each final drive and wheel has the same removal procedure.
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products.Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

Attach Tooling (A) to final drive assembly (2) .
Remove 15 bolts (1) and the washers.
Remove final drive assembly (2) .

Remove retaining ring (3) .
Remove ring gear (4) .

Attach Tooling (B) to wheel assembly (8) .
Remove eight bolts (5) , retainer (6) and the shims.
Remove hub assembly (7) .
Remove wheel assembly (8) .
Remove O-ring seal (9) .

Use Tooling (C) and a suitable press to remove the bushing from the inside of hub assembly (7) .

Use Tooling (D) and Tooling (E) to remove bearing cone (10) from the hub assembly.

Remove the outer half of Duo-Cone seal (11) from the wheel.

Remove bearing cups (12) from the wheel.

Remove bearing cone (14) from wheel spindle (13) .

Remove inner half of Duo-Cone seal (17) .
Remove guard (15) .
Remove 14 bolts (16) , the washers and spindle (13) . The weight of the spindle is 27 kg (60 lb).

Remove O-ring seal (19) .
Remove four bolts (18) and retainer (20) from the spindle.
