Remove And Install Crankshaft Main Bearings
start by: a) remove oil pump driveb) remove oil pump 1. Remove No. 2 and No. 6 main bearing caps (1). 2. Install tool (A) in the oil hole of crankshaft and turn crankshaft to push out upper halves of main bearings. Push on the end of bearing that does not have a tab. Remove lower halves of bearings from the caps.3. Put clean engine oil on upper halves of bearings. Push upper bearing halves in place with tool (A). Push against the end of bearing that has a tab. 4. Clean the main bearing caps. Install the lower halves of bearings in the caps.5. Use wire (B) to check bearing clearance. Install bearing caps with a piece of wire (B) between the bearing surface and the crankshaft journal. Be sure number on bearing cap is next to and the same as the location number on the cylinder block.6. Put clean oil on the threads of the nuts and install the nuts. Tighten each nut to 140 5 lb. ft. (190 7 N m) of torque. Put a mark across the nut and stud. Tighten each nut 120° from mark on stud.7. Remove main bearing caps and measure thickness of wire. Main bearing clearance with new parts must be .0040 to .0082 in. (0.102 to 0.208 mm). Maximum permissible clearance with used parts is .012 in. (0.30 mm). 8. Put clean oil on bearing surfaces and install bearing caps in their correct location. Install and tighten the nuts to 140 5 lb. ft. (190 7 N m) of torque. Put a mark across the nut and stud. Tighten each nut 120° from mark on stud.9. Remove No. 1, 3, 4, 5, and 7 main bearing caps.10. Repeat Steps 2 through 8 for the remaining bearings.
