AllThere are various conditions that may appear to be a leak. The following information will assist in determining if the duo-cone seal gp is leaking.Note: An inner duo-cone seal gp will cause the leak to stay contained on the inside of the axle. The leak will cause the oil level to rise in the axle.
Illustration 1 g02093733
First conditionThe following characteristics may be attributed to condition 1:
The seal will have a moist appearance. The seal will appear to be weeping. This is considered acceptable for operation.
The area around the seal will have a wet appearance.
The color of the oil will be light brown. There must be a thin film of lubricant between the faces on the duo-cone seal gp. This will ensure that the duo-cone seal gp is functioning correctly. Some of the lubricant will come out of the seal. The seal will appear to be weeping. This is not uncommon. This is considered acceptable for operation.

Second condition
Illustration 3 g02084594
Second conditionThe following characteristics may be attributed to condition 2:
The seal will appear to be seeping.
The area will appear black and shiny. There will be no dripping.Monitor the duo-cone seal gp when this condition is present. Clean the area of oil and debris in order to monitor if the seepage has stopped.Approximately 200 hours to 250 hours are needed in order to seat a new duo-cone seal gp. Before the duo-cone seal gp seats the first condition may happen or the second condition may occur. Do not replace the duo-cone seal gp.

Third condition
Illustration 5 g02084597
Third conditionDrops of oil will be coming off of the housing for the duo-cone seal gp onto the wheel rims or the ground in the third condition. The duo-cone seal gp is leaking. The duo-cone seal gp will need to be replaced.Note: The duo-cone seal gp may become unusable after 1000 hours of service life if the seal is disturbed. Caterpillar recommends replacing the duo-cone seal gp since the duo-cone seal gp will not be able to reseat. This Condition may occur in machines that have been idle for a long period of time. The machine may need to be ran in order to reseat the duo-cone seal gp. Clean the area that is affected. Continue to monitor the area for this condition. Replace the duo-cone seal gp if this condition continues to occur. Refer to Special Instruction, REHS5221, "Inspection of the Duo-cone Seal Gp".When you replace the duo-cone seal gp provide the information that is listed below:
Measure the assembled height of the seal. You must take a measurement in four positions that are located 90 degrees from each other.
The sealing ring may have twisted or the sealing may may have bulged. You must check.
Scoring may be present on the metal sealing ring. You must check. Record the date code or the serial number on the metal sealing
