Install the seat (44) in the drive housing.

Install the backup ring (45) and the bumper (46) in the drive housing.

Install the piston return spring (47) in the drive housing.

Put the drive gear, the piston, and the drive shaft assembly as a unit in position on the piston return spring.
Put the ring (48) in position over the piston. Install Tool (C) between the drive gear and the piston. Use a press in order to compress the piston return spring. Install the ring (48) in the groove of the drive housing. Release the press and remove Tool (C).

Install the bearing in the gear case. Use Tool (D) in order to install the ring that holds the bearing in the gear case.

Install the drive housing in the gear case . Ensure that the shaft on the end of the drive gear is correctly engaged with the bearing in the gear case. Install the bolts that hold the drive housing to the gear case. Tighten the bolts to a torque of 38 N m (28 lb ft).

Use Tool (E) in order to install the ring (51) on the end of the drive gear shaft.
Illustration 36 g00540940Note: Air starting motors for standard engine rotation rotate clockwise when the motors are viewed from the pinion end of the starting motor. The bolt (52) for a clockwise rotation starting motor has left hand threads.Note: Air starting motors for reverse engine rotation rotate counterclockwise when the motors are viewed from the pinion end of the starting motor. The bolt (52) for a counterclockwise rotation starting motor has right hand threads.
Install the spring (55), sleeve (54), drive pinion (53), bolt (52), and the washer on the end of the drive shaft. Tighten the bolt (52) to a torque of 108 N m (80 lb ft).

Install the gear case (50) and the drive housing (42) as a unit on the motor housing (3). Put 2P-2506 Thread Compound on the threads of the bolts (56) that hold the cover and the housing. Install the bolts (56). Tighten each bolt alternately to a torque of 81 N m (60 lb ft).

Install the silencer (58) and the gasket on the motor housing.
Install the elbow (57) and the gasket on the cover assembly.
In order to check the operation of the air starter, use the following procedure:
Turn the drive pinion (53) by hand in the direction of the starter's rotation. The drive clutch must operate with a smooth action.
Turn the drive pinion (53) in the opposite direction of the starter's rotation. The drive pinion must turn by hand.
Put 345 kPa (50 psi) of air pressure in the inlet line of the drive housing. The drive pinion (53) must move away from the drive housing. Air must come out of the
