Information:
66. Put cover (96) in position on cage (95), and install four bolts (98).
It is necessary to measure the pinion projection at this time. The pinion is adjusted with shims, and must be correctly positioned before it is assembled to the transmission case.
See the Specifications module for the adjustment procedure and dimensions. 67. Use tooling (H) as shown to measure the distance from the end of pinion assembly (80) to the case side of end plate (90). Use this dimension and the procedure in the Specifications module to measure the pinion projection. Use shims under cage (95) to make the adjustment. 68. Install reverse idler shaft (99) onto transmission end plate (90) with the six bolts.69. Heat the two bearings to a temperature of 135°C (275°F) for a maximum time of ten minutes. Install the lower bearing onto reverse idler shaft (99).70. Lower the temperature of the two bearing cones, and install them into reverse idler gear (100). The spacer ring should be installed between the two bearing cones. Install reverse idler gear (100) onto reverse idler shaft (99).71. Put the inner spacer ring and upper bearing (101) onto the reverse idler shaft.72. Put retainer (102) in position, and install the bolt that holds it. 73. Install tooling (J) to end plate (90), and attach a hoist. Put the end plate with the pinion assembly in position on transmission case (3). Install 21 bolts (103). 74. Lower the temperature of the three bearing cups, and install them in cage (104), cage (105) and cage (106). Install the seal ring onto cage assembly (106).
Make sure that there are enough shims under each of the cages to cause a measurable end play. Damage to the bearings may occur if there are not enough shims under the cages when the bolts are tightened.
75. put cage (104), (105), and (106) in position with the shims. Make sure there are enough shims under each cage to cause an end play, and install the six bolts in each of the cages. 76. Make sure the transmission case is in a vertical position (end plate up). Use tooling (K), and measure the shaft bearing end play under cages (104), (105), and (106). See topic Adjustment Of End Play For The Transmission Shaft Bearings in the Specifications Module. 77. Install tooling (L) onto the transmission, and attach a hoist. Turn the transmission case to be in a horizontal position.78. Install two support assemblies (107), and put the transmission on blocks. 79. Use tooling (K), and measure the backlash at bevel gear (66). See the Specifications module for the correct adjustment procedure. Add or remove shims under bevel gear cage (60) to adjust the backlash. If the pinion projection was set correctly and if the backlash was adjusted correctly with the bevel gear in position, the tooth contact pattern should also be correct. The tooth contact should, however, be checked and adjusted if necessary. See the Specifications module for the proper procedure. 80. Lower the temperature of bearing
