There have been reports of early hour piston pump failures. To date, these failures have occurred only at internal Caterpillar facilities on units with less than 6 hours. The failure mode has been identified as internal pump wear on the piston slippers and swash plate.Solution
Manufacturing process changes have been made on the piston pumps. All factories and service parts are in process of receiving new pumps. At this point no actions are required for field machines. Investigations are in process to determine if any actions are necessary. Caterpillar has initially identified pumps built after 14March 2012 and before 14December 2012 as "suspect" pumps. The date of manufacture is on the Serial Number plate of the pump.

The Serial Number is the lower of the two numbers. The first six numbers of the serial code represent a date format of "yymmdd".Until specific serial numbers are determined, continue to monitor and inspect the main hydraulic return filter for debris, abnormal discoloration of the hydraulic fluid, and monitor SOS. If the machine has a case drain filter, inspect for debris. If a failure is suspected, contact your Dealership's Technical Communicator (TC) with complete details of symptoms. These details will ensure timely response and diagnosis for your specific situation.
