Required Tools
Tool Part Number Part Description Qty
(A) 123-3801 Installer Assembly 1
Thoroughly clean all parts of the front idler prior to assembly.
Check the condition of bushings (7). If the bushings are worn or damaged, use new parts for replacement.
Illustration 1 g00552015
Lower the temperature of bushings (7), and install one in each side of the front idler with a press.
Temporarily install an idler bearing (3) on shaft (6). Install the shaft in the front idler. Install the other idler bearing (3) on the shaft. Check the end play of the shaft. The shaft end play must be 0.1 mm (0.004 inch) to 1.2 mm (0.047 inch). Remove two idler bearings (3) and shaft (6) from the front idler.

Illustration 3 g00552017Note: Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Duo-Cone Conventional Seals - Remove and Install" in this manual for more information.
Install a Duo-Cone seal (4) in each side of the front idler with Tool (A).
Install a Duo-Cone seal (4) in each idler bearing (3) with Tool (A).

Check the condition of O-ring seals (5) that are used on shaft (6). If the seals are damaged, use new parts for replacement. Install two O-ring seals (5) on shaft (6). Put clean SAE 30 oil on the seals.
Check the condition of spring pins (1) that are used to hold idler bearings (3) to shaft (6). If the spring pins are damaged, use new parts for replacement.

Install shaft (6) in either idler bearing (3). Be sure to align the spring pin hole in the shaft with the spring pin hole in the idler bearing. Be sure that marking "R" and the milled surface of the shaft is facing toward the rear of the idler bearing, as shown. Install a new spring pin (1) in the idler bearing and through the shaft. Install the spring pin with the slit, as shown.
Install the assembled bearing with the shaft into the front idler.
Install the other idler bearing (3) on shaft (6). Be sure to align the spring pin hole in the shaft with the spring pin hole in the idler bearing. Install a new spring pin (1) in the idler bearing and through the shaft. Install the spring pin with the slit, as shown.
Check the front idler for air leaks. Apply 245 to 265 kPa (35.5 to 38.5 psi) of air to the idler for a minimum of 30 seconds . Monitor the pressure gauge reading for 30 seconds. No drop in pressure over 30 seconds indicates that there are no significant leaks in the front idler.
Put the front idler in a vertical position. Fill the front idler with 60 5 mL (2.04 0.17 oz) of clean SAE 30 oil. Reinstall the fill/drain plug in the front idler. End By:
Install front idlers and recoil springs. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Front Idlers and Recoil Springs - Install" in this manual.
