December 2009 PPR UNDERCARRAIGE NOW STANDARD ON D8R/T
Positive Pin Retention (PPR) track is now standard on D8T and D8R tractors. Previously an attachment, PPR track will replace non-PPR track, which will no longer be available on new machines.
Affected Models & Dates
All D8R/T Track Type Tractors built in
East Peoria and Caterpillar Brazil will
come standard with 24? Moderate
Service PPR track. PPR is standard out
of the East Peoria factory effective
January 2009, for the D8T. It is also
standard out of Caterpillar Brazil on the
D8R and D8T effective May 2009.
Other Changes
In coordination with this change, to rationalize offerings, 24? Moderate Service shoes will be the standard configuration on factory built machines. Additionally, PPR track groups with a variety of shoe types will be offered as attachments.
In the parts distribution system, several made-to-order (MTO) non-PPR track groups have been eliminated from the offering. MTO?s with PPR are available, and select non-PPR will remain available through the parts system.
At time of bushing turn, PPR track requires new PPR rings. Also required are different track assembly and PPR ring swaging tools.
Benefits
The PPR design keeps the joints ?tight,? which greatly reduces endplay generation. This will help prevent oil leaking past seals, which leads to dry joints. Due to track pin walking failures, the non-PPR offering has been removed from factory built machines. For this reason, PPR track is also recommended as a service replacement for non-PPR track when it reaches end of service life.
