PROBLEM
The 120-5790 and 120-5794 Gears (grey) that are in the 178-7070 chg 00 Rebuild Kit and the 122-7372 Steering Gear Group can wear and need to be replaced.
ACTION REQUIRED
Rebuild Kits:
Remove the 178-7070 chg 00 Rebuild Kits (with grey gears) from dealer parts stock. Replace the stock with 178-7070 chg 01 Rebuild Kits (with white gears).
Steering Gear Groups:
Rework 122-7372 Steering Gear Groups in dealer parts stock into 344-7849 Steering Gear Group. Use a 178-7070 chg 01 Rebuild Kit (with white gears) to rework the 122-7372 Steering Gear Groups. After the gear groups are reworked, re-label the steering gear groups to a 344-7849 Steering Gear Group. Refer to the attached Rework Procedure.

SERVICE CLAIM ALLOWANCES
0.5 hours will be allowed for each 122-7372 in dealer parts stock that is reworked into a 344-7849.

Handle the parts in accordance with your Warranty Bulletin on warranty parts handling.
Rework Procedure
Note: To rework the 122-7372 Steering Gear Groups into a 344-7849 Steering Gear Group, only the two white gears from the 178-7070 chg 01 Rebuild Kit should be used. The remainder of the 178-7070 chg 01 Rebuild Kit can be discarded.
1. Remove the nut and washer, and remove the lever arm from the gear group.
2. Remove the four allen head screws from the top cover and remove the cover and gasket from the gear group.

3. Remove the existing large and small grey gears from the gear group leaving the existing springs in place.
Note: The spring for the small gear may stick to the bottom of the existing gear when it is removed.
4. Install the existing spring for the small gear and ensure that the spring has the bottom tang inserted in the hole in the housing. Refer to Image 1.2.1.
5. Make a temporary mark on the housing showing the location of the top tang of the spring.
6. Install the new 344-7846 (small) White Gear by aligning the open hole in the gear with the mark made on the housing. Install the gear straight down onto the top tang of the spring. To ensure the spring and gear are installed correctly, hold the gear down, turn the gear clockwise by hand, release the gear, and the gear will return to the free position due to the spring force as shown in Image 1.2.2.

7. Rotate the small gear and install the 344-7847 (large) White Gear by aligning the spring tang in the open slot of the big gear and aligning the first gear tooth of the small gear with the first valley of the big gear. Refer to Image 1.3.1.

8. Hold the small gear down and turn the gears by hand with the big gear to ensure that the two timing marks line up and that there is no binding. Refer to Image 1.4.1.

9. Install the gasket and cover back onto the gear group with the existing allen head screws. Tighten the screws to a torque of 7.5 +/- 1.5 Nm (5.5 +/- 1.0 ft*lbs).
