Illustration 3. Location of seal rings in 785/789 transfer gear group.The former seal rings may be modified to the current configuration by cutting additional slots as shown in Illustrations 4 and 6. The additional slots need only be cut on the side of the seal which will be in contact with the seal carrier when the clutch is pressurized.
Slots (D) may be cut in the seal using a fine tooth saw blade (coping saw or hack saw) that has had the tooth set removed.

During the transmission bench testing, there will be an increase in flow loss due to additional slots. The four additional slots per seal will result in an increased flow loss of approximately 3 L/min (.8 U.S. gpm) per clutch when compared to the former seals. Total flow loss with the seven slot seals will be approximately 8 L/min (2.0 U.S. gpm) per clutch.
