Control lever.The 528 Winch and Fairlead Arrangement is made up of a fairlead frame assembly (1), a Gearmatic winch, adapter and control valve (2), a drive shaft (3), a winch control lever (4) and miscellaneous covers and guards.The drive shaft (3) connects to a power take-off shaft, which operates the winch through a ring gear and pinion set. The power take-off shaft is driven by the output shaft of the torque converter. A yoke on the end of drive shaft (3) connects the input shaft in adapter housing (7). The input shaft is connected to the pinion shaft through a gear set. The ring gear is connected to the flange on the drum shaft. The drum shaft turns when the engine is running. The clutch and brake drum, under cover (6), is connected to the cable drum. The location of the clutch and brake drum is in the winch housing, opposite the ring gear. The clutch assembly is connected to the drum shaft inside of the clutch and brake drum. The clutch assembly turns with the drum shaft.The winch is controlled by a single lever (4), which connects to the control valve in the adapter housing (7) through a push and pull cable. When the control valve is in the HOLD position, the brake spring assembly (12) tightens the brake band (8) against the clutch and brake drum (9). When the operator wants to pull the cable out by hand, the control lever is pushed forward. The drum will turn freely with just enough resistance to prevent the cable drum from releasing more cable than is needed. An adjuster (5) for brake drag on the clutch side of the winch lets the operator make an adjustment to the brake band to get the desired resistance.
