Personal injury can result from hot coolant, steam and alkali.At operating temperature, engine coolant is hot and under pressure. The radiator and all lines to heaters or the engine contain hot coolant or steam. Any contact can cause severe burns.Remove cooling system pressure cap slowly to relieve pressure only when engine is stopped and cooling system pressure cap is cool enough to touch with your bare hand.Do not attempt to tighten hose connections when the coolant is hot, the hose can come off causing burns.Cooling System Coolant Additive contains alkali. Avoid contact with skin and eyes.
Use Cat Extended Life Coolant (ELC) when you add coolant to the cooling system. See Special Publication, SEBU6250, "Caterpillar Machine Fluids Recommendations" for all cooling system requirements. When Cat Extended Life Coolant (ELC) is used, an extender must be added to the cooling system. Use a Coolant Conditioner Test Kit in order to check the concentration of the coolant.
Park the machine on level ground.
Stop the engine and allow the engine to cool. Note: The pressure must be removed from the system before service can be performed. Refer to this Operation and Maintenance Manual, "System Pressure Release".

(1) Access door
(2) Cooling system pressure cap
Open access door (1) that is located between the engine air precleaner assemblies. Slowly remove cooling system pressure cap (2). Note: Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "General Hazard Information" for information on containing fluid spillage.
It may be necessary to drain some coolant from the cooling system so that Cat Extender can be added to the cooling system. Reference: Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Cooling System Coolant (ELC) - Change" for information on draining coolant from the cooling system.Note: Always discard drained fluids according to local regulations.
Add Cat Extended Life Coolant (ELC) to the cooling system. Refer to the following topics for the proper amount of Cat Extender:

(3) Cooling system sight gauge
Locate cooling system level gauge (3). The cooling system level gauge is located behind the operator cab at the front of the enclosure for the engine air cleaner assemblies.
Observe the cooling system sight gauge and maintain the coolant at the proper level. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Cooling System Coolant Level - Check".
Install the cooling system pressure cap and close the access door over the pressure cap.
