Remove the engine and torque converter from themachine.
Insure that the front face of the flywheel housingand rear face of the block is free of oil, fuel, water, dirt, assemblycompounds and any other contaminants during assembly. Also insure bothsurfaces are free of scratches and surface finish or flatness defects.
Certain 988F, 990, and 844 machines, which previouslyhad 1U8846 sealant at the joint, will require machining off 0.9 mm (0.035inch) from the flywheel housing flange face to make room for the new gasketbeing installed.
Install the new 1617293 or 1617294 Flywheel HousingGasket depending on your application. Add appropriate spacers (e.g., 1W3189)and longer bolts (e.g., 0S1590) where required. Details for each machinemodel are provided within Service Information System - Parts Search andDisassembly and Assembly sections.
Apply sealant to fill space at cylinder block,flywheel housing, oil pan joint.
Flywheel housing bolt patterns and installationprocedures vary. Reference the Service Manual specific to the machine modelnumber, machine serial number, and bolt pattern of the flywheel housingbeing installed. Follow the Service Manual installation procedure and tightenthe flywheel housing bolts to the torque values listed, and in the propertorque sequence.
Please use the bolt torque sequencethat best fits your application amongst the typical housing bolt patternsshown attached. The torque sequence diagrams below areprovided for reference only. Follow the Service Manual installation procedureand tighten the flywheel housing bolts to the torque values listed, andin the proper torque sequence.
